Why I am taking Japanese

I am half Japanese and half American, but most of the family that I have met is Japanese.  I want to strengthen my Japanese so that I can better communicate with them and have more meaningful conversations with them.  My Japanese was better when I was younger, and I thought that Japanese was something that I would continue to gradually forget, but I am glad that this class gives me the opportunity to learn and relearn the language of my heritage.

I am an economics major and want to become a trader after college.  I would like to trade with the Nikkei economy.  This is another reason that I would like to strengthen my Japanese.

I have no idea what type of comment we're supposed to be leaving but, whatever.

    Were you born here?
I was stationed in Japan for two years and I absolutely loved it. I'm going back for sure. I took a backpacking trip for 3 weeks, and I started from umm...where did I start? I think Hiroshima? It's amazing how it looks like now considering what had happened. Anyway, it's too sad to get into that.
After Hiroshima, I actually can't remember other places. I hit Kyoto, Osaka, ummm, some other places. My memory is fading. I'm getting old.
The last day of my trip, my friend and I got lost in some very isolated area. There were no buses nearby, or trains. It was getting dark and we started to freak out a little. Then, luckily, we found a ゆうびんきょく, and this really nice lady drove us to the bus station which was almost 30 min away. And we couldn't understand each other. Little things like that makes me want to go back. OH and of course, I'd go back for the food.

There's this ramen place on 125th and Broadway called Jin? It's not like in Japan, but definitely something to consider, if you're ever in that area.

Why did I tell you all that? No idea.
So to end, umm, please correct my nihongo. :)

Why were you stationed in Japan?

Yes Jin Ramen. I've been there a few times. It's good but not super authentic. It's kind of weird to me that they use soba-like noodles for their ramen. Have you been to Nikko on Amsterdam? I've only had their sushi (many times. I often have them deliver to my dorm) but it is pretty reasonable and very good. I hear that their other asian foods (I think they also serve Chinese) is not good. I have not tried their ramen but my friend says that it is better than Jin's. I really like the pork nikuman they have at Jin though.

Thank you for reading and commenting!

I was in the military. Actually, I technically still am. Reservist now. I was stationed in Japan from 2011 till the end of 2012. Came back to go to school.

As for Jin-ramen, yeah, I was a little weird eating their soba-like noodles. I think they're actually wheat-flour noodles. Meh, I don't really know.

Oh yeah, so I might've answered one of your questions incorrectly when we had the practice conversation in class. Anyway, I have three sisters and one bro. He goes to Bing and he's a freshman like me. Except he's 8 years younger.
I have 3 older sisters and they all live in BK. I live in Harlem but I'm ready to move out into bigger and better things. Seriously, cuz my apartment is small.

So you're from Boston? I think that's what you said? Maybe?

すごいですね!I have actually been curious about serving in the military. Maybe we can talk about it sometime!

So you are a G.S. 1st grader? Where are you thinking of moving from Harlem?

I kind of want to move closer to campus but I'm kind of poor. Just as long as I can get to school within a reasonable amount of time, I can live anywhere. I'll go as far as Astoria, or washington heights? But I kind of like the Morningside neighborhood area. It's just so expensive. Would you ever consider living in NY after college? Or are you planning on going back to Boston?

The military wasn't really for me. I enjoyed my time but 8 years was enough. BUT if you do consider going, you should definitely go officer since you'll have your college degree. Officers get a crap load of money. And being fluent in Japanese is also a plus! You can easily be station in Japan if you wanted to.
